Geography

“The study of geography is about more than just memorising places on a map. It’s about understanding the complexity of our world, appreciating the diversity of cultures that exists across continents. And in the end, it’s about using all that knowledge to help bridge divides and bring people together.”
– President Barack Obama, 2012 National Geographic Bee

We intend for learners to acquire knowledge and understanding of the natural and human worlds, sparking their interest in places and people.

Curiosity, critical thinking and compassion are essential skills for geographers. Developing them enables learners to better understand and evaluate the world around them.

Our curriculum is rooted in our values. Geography brings our five values to life in the following ways:

  • Community: learners know and explore the geography of their local communities and the wider world
  • Kindness: learners use their skills as geographers to develop empathy and are encouraged to treat others and the planet kindly
  • Learning for life: learners find out more about the natural and human worlds they live in, sparking their interest in places and people
  • Innovation: learners come up with new ways to manage the earth’s resources and protect the planet for future generations
  • Inclusion: learners appreciate the diversity of people and cultures and understand the benefits of bringing people together

We implement our Geography curriculum in a planned and sequenced way.

This ensures each learner reaches their potential and becomes a flourishing geographer, building on their knowledge and understanding step by step. Take a look at our Knowledge of the World curriculum map to find out more.

As they progress through the map, learners develop skills both within and outside the classroom. We make the most of our local environment on field trips to local parks, reservoirs, canals and museums.

We measure the impact of our Geography curriculum by assessing:

  • How much learners enjoy and engage with the learning
  • How confident they are applying the skills of a geographer in their everyday lives
  • How well they do in internal assessments and external qualifications
  • How prepared learners are for their next steps into further education and employment
  • How confident and resilient they are
